Located 48 miles east of Sacramento and 80 miles to the west of Lake Tahoe and part of the much larger Sierra Foothills AVA, the California Shenandoah Valley AVA became an AVA in 1983, has over 2,000 planted acres. Although best known for Zinfandel, the region also produces Moscato, Pinot Grigio, Barbera, Sangiovese, Petite Sirah, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Marsanne, Rousanne, Petite Sirah and Tempranillo. This region’s volcanic soils are primarily sandy clay loam and are derived from decomposed granite.
